I got an email from a nice young artist named Justin Trawick the other day asking me to review his music. I haven’t updated this in a while, but I thought I’d give this one a shot.
Now this isn’t the kind of thing I’ll be listening to daily, but for what it is, it’s good. For fans of Jack Johnson, that kinda college sit-around-a-bon-fire on the beach thing, it’s good. It brings Ben Taylor(you know, James Taylor’s kid?) to mind. If that’s your cup of tea, check out Justin Trawick.
Damn it’s been a while since I’ve been on here. I’ve since gone to college, but I’ve finally got a break to update. So what have I been listening to?
Well, I’m not really sure how to refer to it. I used to call “Your Favorite Weapon” as old Brand New and “Deja Entendu” as new Brand New, so I guess “The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me” is brand new Brand New.
Anyway, whatever you might call it, Brand New’s new album is a great step forward for the band. They’ve matured and drawn from much broader influences than in any previous album. No longer are they that adolescent emo/punk band dealing with teenage gripes.
“The Devil and God…” could open them up to whole new audiences, especially for fans who may have felt a little guilty with a copy of “Deja Entendu” in their hand.
Not only have they matured to broaden their fan base, but I’d like to believe they won’t be alienating any old fans. Perhaps if you love yourself some teenage poetry, you may be a little turned off, but for the most part, I think this a good move for everyone. Kudos Brand New.
I don’t usually cover rap or hip-hop but I’ve been listening to Lupe Fiasco’s new album a lot recently, and I definetly think it’s worth a mention. If you don’t recognize the name, you may recognize his rhymes from Kayne West’s recent hit “Touch The Sky.”
His new album, Food and Liquor, will be in stores this August. Until then, let Kick Push tide you over. It’s about skateboarding. Not rims, bitches, or blunts. Refreshing.
Johnny Whitney of the Blood Brothers recently spoke to MTV about their upcoming album. Here’s some of what he said:
“I tried to take a very different approach on the lyrics for this record,” said Whitney. “I actually wrote the majority of the lyrics during that Coheed and Cambria tour we were on last fall. With Crimes, there were certain things that were weighing on me — political issues — and the presidential election was in the not-so-distant future. I wanted to try to address that in a sort of direct and poignant way. But with this record, I tried to do the opposite. Rather than addressing things topically, the way I wrote most of the lyrics was through free-writing and associating.”
You can read the rest of the article here.
And for your listening pleasure, I’ve include to the track Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck from their last album, “Crimes.”
Alright, this post is only about half music, but that’s alright, because Brian Posehn is funny as hell.
In case you don’t know who he is, he was great on the short lived Comedians of Comedy, where he toured the country with Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, and Maria Bamford. He was also a regular on the Mr. Show, and has been on Comedy Central many times. Anyway, the point is he was signed to Relapse Records, and now has a video out for his metal spoof “Metal By Numbers”. I’d suggest this to any metal, hardcore, or screamo fan with a sense of humor. It can be found on his myspace. His relapse album, Live In: Nerd Rage, is also in stores today.
I’ve been listening to a lot of The Postal Service recently. I’m not sure why, but I can’t say it’s a bad thing.
So one of the my favorite tracks they’ve done isn’t a track they wrote. Actually it’s a song written by Phil Collins. I know, I hate Phil Collins too. I’m not gonna deny that The Postal Service did it well though, because they turned something I hate into something I love, and that’s worth something… right?
So with that, check out Against All Odds
This was on Pitchfork Media a few days ago, and I just can’t help myself. It’s way too much fun to not post. And the Death From Above 1979 shout out? Yea, it’s fucking awesome.
So why did I mention CSS? Well, that’s who is responsible for the track Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above. It’s cheesy as hell, but I promise you should listen to it. Put everything aside for a moment and just enjoy a great catchy song. By the way, it stands for Cansei De Ser Sexy.
